 Community solar gardens are:
A solution to climate change
A way to save on your electric bill
A way to participate in an equitable renewable energy revolution

You can participate regardless of income, credit score or whether you rent or own, and get a credit on your electric bill. And there are options to participate with no upfront money with our Pay As You Go option.

Minneapolis Climate Action is working with local partners to bring Community Solar Gardens (CSG)  to Minneapolis. Our program is based on the Xcel Energy Solar Rewards Community Program and rates approved by the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (PUC).

MCA's Second Chance Community Solar Garden was developed with local minority business enterprises and Emerge Second Chance Recycling Facility, a nonprofit mattress recycling facility that provides job training for formerly incarcerated citizens. This has been a long journey to this day and we thank Emerge Second Chance Recycling Facility, Renewable Energy Partners,  our certified minority enterprise solar developer; and S3 Solar Service Systems, a black owned solar company.

Emerge will get 18kw of free renewable energy with the option to buy pay as you go shares. Subscribers from our waiting list who have been patiently waiting for this project to become reality will be able to buy shares up front, and there will be a portion reserved for pay-as-you-go subscribers that can participate regardless of income, credit score, or whether they rent or own their own home. As long as you pay an electric bill, you can participate.

Minneapolis Climate Action is proud of the community and volunteer effort to bring equitable renewable energy to our community members and Emerge. See a message here from Emerge Vice President Kevin Engdahl about their work and this community solar garden project.

We are also a member of the Just Solar Coalition, a coalition of nonprofits, faith organizations, and renewable energy organizations grounded in these values:
"We support a transition to a green economy that not only includes everyone but also helps to close the employment gap, improves the natural world and creates a new story about the community's role in the energy system."
WHAT IS COMMUNITY SOLAR?
A shared, centrally-located solar array system that provides electricity and a bill credit to participating subscribers. The only requirement for participation is that you pay your own Xcel Energy electric bill.

BENEFITS
  • Enables renters or others with roofs unsuitable for solar to use renewable energy and get a credit on your electric bill.
  • Enables participation regardless of income or credit score, with a Pay-As-You-Go option that does not require upfront money.
  • Energy bill credits move with you, even if you move homes.
  • Make your money back (& then some...) with an estimated 8 year Return on Investment (ROI).
  • Subscriptions can cover up to 120% of your annual electricity usage.
  • Electricity rates are locked in for 25 years.
