Our First Minneapolis Community Solar Gardens!

Picture

The Emerge Second Chance CSG solar array is installed and sending energy to the grid!
The Second Chance Community Solar Garden (CSG) was developed with local minority business enterprises and Emerge Second Chance Recycling Facility, a nonprofit mattress recycling facility that provides job training for formerly incarcerated citizens. We thank Emerge Second Chance Recycling Facility, Renewable Energy Partners (our certified minority enterprise solar developer) and S3 Solar Service Systems (a black-owned solar company).
The Second Chance CSG provides options for pay-up-front and pay-as-you-go subscribers, who can participate regardless of income, credit score, or whether they rent or own their own home.

The Second Chance CSG was installed in 2021 and connected to the grid in late 2022.  The garden is fully subscribed, but please fill out our general CSG interest form to be added to our waitlist and be notified of openings at either of our community solar gardens.

The North High School CSG is installed and awaiting interconnection.
In collaboration with North Minneapolis High School, Renewable Energy Partners and others, Minneapolis Climate Action helped establish the North High Community Solar Garden. Installed in 2021, this 365 kW solar garden produces enough clean energy to power dozens of Minneapolis homes and apartments every year.
Subscriptions to the North High CSG are available on a pay-as-you-go basis, meaning there is no up front payment required! Rather, subscribers pay a small amount for their subscription each month and get a bill credit that is always higher than the payment. It’s a win-win for your pocketbook and the planet!

North High CSG is full at the moment.
Please fill out our general CSG interest form to be added to our waitlist and be notified of openings at either of our community solar gardens.

In addition to our two installed community solar gardens, we are excited to announce our  collaboration with CANDO (Central Area Neighborhood Development Organization), Lyndale Neighborhood Association, and other partners.
We will create an innovative model for equitable, accessible community solar gardens funded by neighborhoods that bring benefits to the neighborhood and garden subscribers, regardless of whether you rent or own, with no money down, and regardless of income or credit score. True COMMUNITY solar!

Please fill out this form if you want to join this cohort and live or work in the Central or Lyndale neighborhoods.

What is Community Solar?

A community solar project is a solar power plant whose electricity is shared by more than one property.

The primary purpose of community solar is to allow members of a community the opportunity to share the benefits of solar power even if they can't or don't want to install solar panels on their property. Participants benefit from the electricity generated by the community solar farm, which costs less than the price they would ordinarily pay to their utility.
BENEFITS
  • Enables renters or others with roofs unsuitable for solar to use renewable energy and get a credit on your electric bill.
  • Enables participation regardless of income or credit score, with a Pay-As-You-Go option that does not require upfront money.
  • Energy bill credits move with you, even if you move homes.
  • Make your money back (& then some...) with an estimated 8 year Return on Investment (ROI).
  • Subscriptions can cover up to 120% of your annual electricity usage.
  • Electricity rates are locked in for 25 years.
  • Quality assurances, turn-key maintenance and energy guarantees.
