Did you know that methane produce by organic matter in our landfills is 72% worse than CO2?
Organics Recycling is an easy and accessible way to reduce your carbon footprint while creating a valuable resource. Collect your food scraps and compostable paper and BPI Certified compostable dishware and they will be turned into compost that is used to create healthy soil and in landscaping and road projects.
Curbside organics recycling is now available to all Minneapolis residents who live in single family homes, duplexes or fourplexes!
It is free to sign up since the fee is already included in solid waste services that includes trash and recycling pickup. Even if you do backyard composting, it's important to sign up for curbside pickup, because there are many items that you can put in curbside organics that can't go in a backyard bin, like bones, and compostable paper goods.
Sign up through Minneapolis Climate Action by filling out the form at the bottom of the page or go to the city website to sign up online or by phone. If you sign up through Minneapolis Climate Action, we will give you a free countertop bin and starter bags.
More info below on how to do organics recycling and the benefits for you and the planet!
From the city website:
"Organics collected through the program are brought to a commercial composting facility where they're mixed with yard waste and composted. Microbes break down material in the piles, causing them to heat up. After several pile turnings and a curing process – a process that takes six to nine months – the compost is screened to remove any items that didn’t get composted (such as larger sticks or contaminants) and is ready for use in gardens, or in landscaping or erosion control projects. Click here to watch a video of what happens to organics when they arrive at the composting facility. Click here for a short animated video produced by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency."
