Daryeel Cimilada (Care for Climate in Somali) Climate Ambassador Program was launched the summer of 2021 in Whittier Park with our partner FRAYEO (Fortune Relief and Youth Empowerment Program) led by executive director Ukasha Dakane. Daryeel Cimilada meets with Minneapolis youth to engage, train, and create local climate ambassadors steeped in knowledge about the relationship between climate change, zero waste action, and environmental justice. The outcome will be informed and empowered youth from underserved communities who teach their community about climate impacts and show that individual and collective actions matter and add up. We meet weekly with youth at Whittier Park providing engagement, training, food, stipends and reusable items like water bottles.
Our Summer 2021 cohort of Daryeel Cimilada Climate Ambassadors graduated on July 29, 2021 and will continue with the next round of training in August 2021.
Hennepin County funded our first round but did not fund our second year, even though we are reaching some of the hardest to reach and most eager to learn youth. FRAYEO and MCA are determined to continue. We are moved at every meeting with these future climate activists!!! Please consider making a donation to help us fund this work and pay BIPOC youth as assistants in the program. Please put Daryeel Cimilada in the comment section so we can ensure the donation goes to the Daryeel Cimilada Program.
